Item type: Item , A story-writing based study on the acquisition of aspect in Spanish by Mandarin Chinese learners(John Benjamins Publishing, 2020) Sun, Yuliang ; Díaz Rodríguez, Lourdes, 1964- ; Taulé, MarionaIn this paper, we analyze the acquisition of Spanish past tense aspect by Mandarin Chinese learners of Spanish by means of three semi-guided writing tests. Specifically, we analyze the choice of pretérito indefinido and pretérito imperfecto, taking into account lexical aspect, grounding information, and the combination of both as variables. Moreover, we analyze whether transfer from Mandarin Chinese, the students' first language (L1), occurs in the acquisition process. Our results partly support the Lexical Aspect Hypothesis (Andersen, 1991; Andersen & Shirai, 1996) and the Discourse Hypothesis (Bardovi-Harlig, 1994). According to these hypotheses, verbal properties and grounding information play a role in the selection of pretérito indefinido or pretérito imperfecto. Finally, our data support the existence of L1 transfer at the semantic level only.
Item type: Item , Can input statistics over-ride a prior bias in morpheme ordering? a test case with gender and number(University of California, 2025) Li, Chunan; Saldaña, Carmen ; Culbertson, JenniferIn languages which mark both gender and number as distinct morphemes, there is a tendency to place gender closer to the noun stem than number. However, the typological data on this is sparse. Moreover, linguistic theories differ in how they explain ordering patterns of gender and number morphology: some theories focus on the structure of the representations of features in the speakers¿ minds, and other focus on the role of co-occurrence statistics. In a recent study, Saldana, Kanampiu, and Culbertson (in press) use artificial language learning to show that learners with a diverse range of language experience with grammatical gender and number exhibit a consistent bias for orders with gender closer to the noun stem than number. This order reflects the ordering in which most linguistic theories assume number and gender features are derived in word formation. Here, we build on this study to investigate how this bias interacts with the statistics of the linguistic input. In particular, we manipulate co-occurrence between stems and affixes so that learners are exposed to combinations of stems and number morphology more often than to stems and gender morphology. We test whether input statistics can push learners to reverse their natural preference, leading them to place number closer to the noun than gender. We find that our manipulation reduces, but does not reverse, the preference for genderclosest order. However, our study also highlights some difficulties learners have in acquiring novel features from sparse data. Ultimately, our findings highlight the dynamic interplay between representations of meaning and input-based learning mechanisms.
Item type: Item , Narrative abilities at age 3 are associated positively with gesture accuracy but negatively with gesture rate(American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2023) Pronina, Mariia; Grofulovic, Jelena; Prieto Vives, Pilar, 1965-; Igualada Pérez, AlfonsoPurpose: Though the frequency of gesture use by infants has been related to the development of different language abilities in the initial stages of language acquisition, less is known about whether this frequency (or "gesture rate") continues to correlate with language measures in later stages of language acquisition, or whether the relation to language skills also depends on the accuracy with which such gestures are produced (or reproduced). This study sets out to explore whether preschoolers' narrative abilities are related to these two variables, namely, gesture rate and gesture accuracy. Method: A total of 31 typically developing 3- to 4-year-old children participated in a multimodal imitation task, a context-based gesture elicitation task, and a narrative retelling task. Results: Results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between the children's narrative scores and their gesture accuracy scores, whereas higher rates of gesture use did not correlate with higher levels of narrative skill. Further multimodal regression analysis confirmed that gesture accuracy was a positive predictor of narrative performance, and moreover, showed that gesture rate was a negative predictor. Conclusions: The fact that both gesture accuracy and gesture rate are strongly and differently linked to oral language abilities supports the claim that language and gesture are highly complex systems, and that complementary measures of gesture performance can help us assess with greater granularity the relationship between gesture and language development. These findings highlight the need to use gesture during clinical assessments as an informative indicator of language development and suggest that future research should further investigate the value of multimodal programs in the treatment of language and communication disorders.
Item type: Item , Interactional training interventions boost children's expressive pragmatic abilities: evidence from a novel multidimensional testing approach(Elsevier, 2021) Pronina, Mariia; Hübscher, Iris; Holler, Judith; Prieto Vives, Pilar, 1965-This study investigates the effectiveness of training preschoolers in order to enhance their social cognition and pragmatic skills. Eighty-three 3-4-year-olds were divided into three groups and listened to stories enriched with mental state terms. Then, whereas the control group engaged in non-reflective activities, the two experimental groups were guided by a trainer to reflect on mental states depicted in the stories. In one of these groups, the children were prompted to not only talk about these states but also 'embody' them through prosodic and gestural cues. Results showed that while there were no significant effects on Theory of Mind, emotion understanding, and mental state verb comprehension, the experimental groups significantly improved their pragmatic skill scores pretest-to-posttest. These results suggest that interactional interventions can contribute to preschoolers' pragmatic development, demonstrate the value of the new embodied training, and highlight the importance of multidimensional testing for the evaluation of intervention effects.

Item type: Item , Repensar los márgenes desde la ficción: literatura con notas al pie transficcionales(Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, 2025) Gimeno Ugalde, EstherThis essay presents an analysis of Notas ao Pé da Página by Moacyr Scliar and El Fill del Corrector / Arre, arre, Corrector, by Adrià Pujol and Rubén Martín, highlighting them as irreverent examples of transfictional literature with footnotes. After a brief introduction to the "fictional turn" in Translation Studies and the growing interest in transfiction, it explores the role of transfictional footnotes as apparently marginal spaces in which fictional translators assume the narrative voice to become protagonists in the story. In contrast to the common perception of the translator's footnotes as marginal elements, in both texts, the footnotes emerge as narrative and formal devices that give visibility to the figure of the translator and expand their conventional scope of action. It is thus argued that these fictional spaces operate as heterotopias that challenge the discursive order between the original and the translation and between the author and the translator, allowing for reflection on the close relationship between the act of translating and the writing process itself, as well as on the unstable nature of texts.

Item type: Item , Making dictionary content accessible for people with visual impairments(Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal-WAT, 2025) Rees, Geraint PaulThis article discusses the development and evaluation of EDictViz: a visually accessible dictionary website intended to meet the accessibility needs of people with visual impairments. It is argued that dictionary access is important not only because of the utilitarian role that dictionaries play in resolving language queries but also because of their potential to promote social inclusion. With reference to previous research, a summary is provided of the barriers to access typically faced by people with visual impairments when using dictionary websites. Following this, the way in which these problems have been addressed in the development and evaluation process of EDictViz thus far is discussed. An evaluation of a development version of EDictViz based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines is reported - it indicates that the latest prototype version of the tool is accessible. This suggests that the design decisions taken at the outset of the project were sound. Throughout this process the parallels between lexicography research, which is often concerned with providing efficient access to lexicographic data, and accessibility research in general are drawn. Plans for future experimental studies to evaluate EDictViz which directly involve people with visual impairments are set out. This development process demonstrates the potential for mutually beneficial collaboration between accessibility and lexicography researchers.

Item type: Item , Grammatical gender agreement in production: the case of heritage Russian(SAGE Publications, 2024) Vorobyeva, Tamara; Bel, Aurora ; Voeikova, MariaAims and objectives/purpose/research questions: The primary goal of this study was to investigate the knowledge of Russian gender in young heritage speakers through different agreement constructions. Design/methodology/approach: Participants were 30 Russian-Spanish-Catalan multilinguals from Spain aged 7-11 years, divided into two proficiency groups, and a baseline group of 24 age-matched Russian monolinguals residing in Russia. All participants completed four experiments using an oral elicited production task addressing different linguistic conditions. Data and analysis: The accuracy scores were compared between the two proficiency groups and between the heritage and monolingual speakers to document any changes as a function of the type of agreement construction, gender value, noun form transparency, and crosslinguistic congruency. Findings/conclusions: The results demonstrated a hierarchy of gender values; masculine being the easiest gender value, neuter the most difficult, and feminine in between the two. The crosslinguistic influence was yelled under vulnerable conditions: when (1) the proficiency in heritage language is low, (2) in opaque and (or) incongruent nouns, and (3) in agreement construction which is absent in Spanish and Catalan. The results also suggest that the heritage language from the high-proficiency group can attain monolingual-like gender agreement knowledge. Originality: We documented gender agreement production in trilingual speakers, which is an under-explored topic. The study employs a new method of analysing gender in several constructions, including adjectival and verbal agreement at Noun Phrase and sentence levels. Significance/implications: The study provides insights into heritage language development during the early years of exposure to the two majority languages. The results may offer a greater understanding of the characteristics of heritage language/L2 development in trilingual children.
Item type: Item , The changing dynamics in the translations of Chinese humanities and social sciences into English (1989-2019)(UNLISTED PUBLISHER, 2025) Pavón-Belizón, MThis article examines the dynamics driving the translation of contemporary Chinese humanities and social sciences into English between 1989 and 2019. Based on a database of 256 translated works, it identifies three phases of translations: (1) the early 1990s, dominated by works on the 1989 social movement and modernization theory; (2) the early 2000s, marked by a growing interest in China¿s intellectual landscape; and (3) the 2010s, characterized by an unprecedented rise in translations, including those initiated and funded by Chinese institutions. This study highlights the mediating role of social, (geo)political, economic and intellectual contexts in shaping translation initiatives, selection processes, and discourse formation. It argues that translation is deeply embedded in geopolitical power structures, influencing the circulation and reception of Chinese humanities and social sciences. By analyzing the evolving dynamics of translation, this article provides insight into how knowledge is transmitted across cultural and political boundaries, revealing the intersection of translation, history, and global power shifts.
