Abstract

This essay is aimed to provide guidelines to translate the LGBTIQ+ jargon into Catalan for voice-over, using the north-American show RuPaul’s Drag Race as a source text. With colloquialism and humour as unifying threads, this show displays the LGBTIQ+ community jargon by using puns, insulting names, rhymes, and cultural references, among others. The show’s famous phraseology has also had a relevant impact on the community jargon. Drag and LGBTIQ+ cultures are complex, they also deal with sensitive topics that need to be addressed with accuracy, inclusion, and respect. On the other hand, the Catalan community, with almost no LGBTIQ + or drag references on television, exhibits the need to showcase this type of reality. The lack of representation in the media results in a lack of visibility, power, and culture in Catalan. Thus, a comparison will be made, analysing the voice-overs and subtitles of Netflix in Spanish and an alternative solution will be proposed in Catalan for a series of interesting terms from the point of view of translation. To do so, the use of existing LGBTIQ+ jargon in Catalan is key to being able to respect the identity connotations of the original.
