Otra vuelta de tuerca: el espectral ambiguo en River

Abstract

Un cráneo horadado que revela la cualidad espectral de un personaje es el punto de contacto más visual entre el filme The Sixth Sense y la ficción televisiva River. No obstante, con 15 años entre el primero y la segunda, el “veo gente muerta” de Cole Sear devino cliché cultural, y, arguye este ensayo, convirtió el valor de shock de la revelación en uno entre otros recursos de River, que prefiere valerse de la parca fiabilidad narrativa del personaje principal y de la fantasmagoría metafórica de sujetos invisibilizados por la marginación social.

A hollowed cranium that reveals a character’s spectral quality is the strongest visual contact point between the film The Sixth Sense and the television fiction River. Nonetheless, with 15 years between the first and the latter, Cole Sear’s “I see dead people” became a cultural cliché, and, this essay argues, turned the shock value of the revelation into one amongst other resources for River, which prefers to rest on its main character’s narrative unreliability and on the spectral metaphor of people who have been turned invisible by social margination.
