El problema de la restricción en la traducción de Samuel Beckett

Abstract

One of the problems that a translator has to deal with when translating Samuel Beckett's work is the restrictions. These restrictions present great difficulties in the case of Beckett's latest short prose, because it is the culmination of his thought. Therefore a translator should be aware of them to solve the problems they generate when translating. Moreover, there are none previous translations in to Spanish of the five texts than we have chosen (The Image, Heard in the Dark 1 and 2 - that we will consider as just one text-, As the Sto1y was Told, Neither and Stirrings Still), except for Stirrings Still, that Miguel Martínez-Lage has previously translated. In this article we will try to identify the influences in Beckett's thought and we will connect it to some linguistic features in his prose. Also we will provide a translation as accurate as possible according to Beckett' s writing style. To justify our translation we will give two different possibilities of translation, comparing our own with Martínez-Lage's one, both translations will exemplify each one of the different translation possibilities. In conclusion, we have done a first approach to make an accurate translation according to Beckett's style without forgetting the sense of his work. by knowing his motivation to write. In the future it could be done more work following on one of the topics that we have exposed in this article in order to provide more information about them.
