In 2014, the new party Podemos appeared in the political arena. They introduced themselves as the alternative against the bipartidism of Popular Party and Socialist Party. In their discourse, they defend doing politics for the citizens and being a tool for the people. In this work, we focus on the leading figure of the secretary general of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias. Our aim is to analyse the connotative meaning of the words and expressions he puts into practice in his speeches in order to observe the most predominant strategies that he uses to convince his voters. Moreover, from a diachronic perspective we analyse the differences regarding the use of these strategies in two different periods; two speeches of January 2014 (the creation of Podemos) and two of December 2015 (before the general elections). Our goal is to prove if during these almost two years there has been a significant change in his discourse. Regarding the results, we have confirmed that the vocabulary and linguistic expressions play a key role in the construction of the opposition. The leader uses strategies as symbol words to differentiate his party from the traditional ones by contrasting people and politicians and indicating that Podemos conform the first group. Preliminary results show that in January 2014 we find a large quantity of insults towards his political adversaries that are lacking in December 2015. Moreover, the use of emotive language tends to be negative in the first term while it is positive in the second period.
