Abstract

Literary texts have been and continue to be a source of stories for cinema. Film adaptation in the field of translation belongs to a category first called intersemiotic by Roman Jakobson in 1959. This paper focuses on the analysis of the adaptation of Stephen King's novel The Shining by Stanley Kubrick, considering it as an intersemiotic translation and observing how the director turns another author’s text into a personal work. Starting from the context of Kubrick’s universe, which has its own language and its own conceptual and ideological framework, the intention of this project is to show the procedures by which it was possible to bring the text to the big screen from a traductological perspective, which includes the director's reinterpretation of the characters, the plot line and the supernatural aspect of the novel, to end up determining the nature of the original text. Reference is also made to the subsequent series promoted by the author of the novel and to the intertextual aspects of previous works that converge to end up determining the perspective of the adaptation. In the conclusions we will discuss how this is one of those cases in which the film ends up surpassing the novel.
