  • dc.description.abstract Venezuelan historical archaeology has a considerable trajectory, albeit one that has still largely gone unnoticed internationally. In this introductory chapter I open by providing a critical review of the early origins of Venezuelan historical archaeology starting with the foundational work of José María Cruxent in the 1950s, highlighting why his pioneering historical archaeological research was significantly ahead of its time. I then undertake the first comprehensive survey of the more than 165 historical archaeological studies performed throughout the country up until the early 2020s, providing an extensive bibliography for researchers and the interested public. This is then followed by a teasing out of some of the trends, themes, and patterns that can be seen in these investigations over the past 70 years and a reflection on the current disciplinary identity of Venezuelan historical archaeology. I then introduce the chapters of this volume and close by discussing what I see are four areas for growth in the Venezuelan subdiscipline, providing a series of pointers that can help guide the way for future historical archaeological studies in the country.
