Cheong called the 'Spanish connection' , a key factor in the development of Canton trade between 1815 and 1830. It offers some insights about the context in which Hispanic actors had originated from, as epitomized by Yrisarri's case. The chapter then demonstrates that the Hispanic contribution to the development of the opium trade in East Asia was essential for its evolution in the uncertain circumstance of the 1820s, a period neglected in most analyses of Westerners trade in Asia. The increasing Spanish trade in Canton resulted from profound changes experienced in the Philippines under the influence of the wider Bourbon reforms. Yet topplings can be far less specific - events that are difficult to define, scattered across time and space. The article focuses on this indefinability of topplings through a wide range of examples from Russia to Iraq. These include unintentional topplings, eternal topplings, and topplings that create more than they destroy. The purpose of this article is to show how, on the one hand, there is a tremendous variety in topplings, and, on the other hand, to propose a way of looking at their commonalities. These commonalities are found in the way topplings unite seemingly contradictory characteristics: topplings are both moments of aliveness and demise; they are the moments when an image is destroyed while sparking new visual experiences; they can be rapid and endlessly drawn out and oscillate between top-down and bottom-up forces. Frente al aletargado presente en que vivimos, artistas, fotógrafos, cineastas están construyendo una nueva relación con su tiempo, lo que significa cambiar la forma en que el pasado, el presente y el futuro se relacionan entre sí. Se sumergen en los diferentes estratos históricos para sonsacar una experiencia que revuelva el tiempo y permita imaginar otros futuros. Este libro invita a conocer esta nueva conciencia del tiempo pasado presentando un conjunto de trabajos de investigación teórica y artística. Se reúnen tanto artículos de historia, historia del arte, filosofía, teoría del cine, como proyectos de artistas, fotógrafos y cineastas. La primera sección, "Apariciones espectrales", presenta formas de ficcionalización de la historia, así como situaciones en que la ficción se mezcla con la realidad para engendrar mundos nuevos. La segunda sección, "Pliegues temporales: gestos anacronistas", trata de pensar nuestro presente histórico a partir de las formas de apropiación del pasado más características de esta época. Finalmente, "Revoluciones: del fin al principio del tiempo", introduce el problema del fin de la historia y de la posibilidad de la vuelta a empezar en algunos de sus sentidos. En este diálogo interdisciplinar y creativo, el lector encontrará un diagnóstico transversal sobre cómo nuestra cultura está cambiando la forma de pensar su temporalidad y, con ella, su historia. Recuperamos así aquel gesto que Nietzsche ya invocó en su momento: «obrar de manera intempestiva, contraria al tiempo y, por esto mismo, sobre el tiempo y a favor de un tiempo futuro». Al fin y al cabo, es también pensando en el futuro que proponemos reinventar a Cloe, la musa de la historia.
Item type: Ítem , Haunted salt: the Saltpan of La Tortuga Island, slavery, and Atlantic sugar economies, 1638-1781(SpringerNature, 2025) Antczak, Konrad A.The saltpan of the uninhabited and largely forgotten Venezuelan island of La Tortuga was vital to the functioning of the British and French Atlantic sugar economies during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In this chapter I retrace the itineraries of La Tortuga's free and low-grade salt as it travelled in the holds of small Anglo-American ships returning to New England, where it was utilized in curing the low-grade category of refuse fish. By reconstructing the commodity circuit of this salt, I then reveal how it returned to the Caribbean aboard the salt ships, preserving the fragile flesh of refuse fish that was sold as provender for the enslaved toiling on sugar plantations in the British and French islands. To this day saltfish has remained deeply embedded in the culinary practices of the region's inhabitants. Finally, I explore how more than a hundred individually sized punch bowls found in the excavations of the Anglo-American campsites are potent exemplars of micro-globalities, where the regional and global came to be nested in the local, specifically in the form of rum punch, the ingredients of which included sugar and rum-products of West Indian plantations.
