The resultative sentence is a recurrent construction of the English syntax. This type of sentences involves the use of an adjective or a prepositional phrase that specifies the change of state or displacement undergone by the referent of the sentence. As it involves two subevents that have a causal relation, this construction needs to be studied from both syntactic and semantic accounts. The goal of this paper is to analyze resultative sentences according to the type of verbs they appear with, either transitive or intransitive, and it is conceives for all thos Catalan speakers who translate from English, or simply use English as their work tool. The main research literature regarding this topic is discussed and several subtypes of resultative sentences are presented, explaining their syntactic properties and proposing equivalent syntactic structures in Catalan. Namely, the resultative sentence needs to be translated for somewhat equivalent structures that express result, or ending, such as final (or purpose) adverbial clauses, consecutive (or result) adverbial clauses, the use of gerunds , or the use of time and place adverbial complements. Finally, a corpus of naturally-ocurring examples from literary works is included along with their possible translations into catalan and a brief explanation about the translation and the syntactic and lexical choices. The corpus examples show that, although the proposing of equivalent sentences, the translation is most of the time determined/nby the context of the sentence, as we have observed with some examples in the corpus.
