From corpses to corpus: analyzing pragmatic and cultural elements in public service announcements in Spain and the United States

- dc.description.abstract Purpose This study analyzes whether there are any differences in translated and non-translated English and Spanish public service announcements (PSAs) published in the United States and Spain with regard to register in the Hallidayan sense and two of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Methodology The comparable corpora of forty-two PSAs in English and Spanish published in the United States and Spain were qualitatively analyzed for register and two cultural dimensions. They were compared between languages within each country, as well as between the two countries. Findings The corpora is too small to confidently verify that any contrastive differences found in PSAs translated between Spanish and English, as well as non-translated text in both languages, encapsulate any particular cultural values or differing values between languages and cultures.ca
