Using augmented reality to create an edutainment experience about Pompeii - A collaboration with the IDEAL Digital Arts Center

    This paper proposes an edutainment experience about Pompeii using augmented reality (AR). Previous research indicates that AR is a suitable technology to implement in experiences. AR can be used for edutainment purposes and for collaboration in-between visitors through its immersive affordances. In collaboration with the IDEAL Digital Arts Center for the development of the final project for the MA “Digital Culture and Emerging Media”, an experience with an emphasis on visitor interaction and immersion was designed for the space of a white box. The interactions were developed according to the STEAM Model (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) which is used for the development of critical thinking and new technologies. Furthermore, the En/Ex Model, which comprises engagement and expressive approaches of activity design theory, was used to balance different transdisciplinary approaches. Additionally, a documentation analysis was combined with practice-based research and a visitor evaluation to achieve optimal results.
