Seguint els paradigmes de l’anàlisi crítica del discurs (ACD), es du a terme una anàlisi lèxica i argumentativa de vint-i-vuit editorials del diari El País sobre el procés independentista de Catalunya i els seus protagonistes, entre el gener de 2013 i l’abril de 2014.
2014-Catalonia undertook an eminently social and civilised process to independence. This paper analyses the discursive construction made by El País of this process and its main characters, within the Wodak, Fairclough and Van Dijk‘s critical discourse analysis (CDA)/nparadigm. Due to specificities of Spanish nationalism and its delegitimating speech this/ndiscourse analysis is a very current issue. The hypothesis of this paper focuses on the/nconsideration that Catalan independence may break the Spanish nation and thus it has no/nplace in the 1978 Spanish Constitution. Twenty-eight leading articles covering a fifteenmonths/nperiod, from January 2013 until April 2014, constitutes the corpus of this analysis./nThe methodology applied in this paper is based on lexical and argument analysis. On the/none hand, lexical analysis was made in two parts: a quantitative analysis of the most/nfrequent keywords and then a qualitative analysis of nouns, verbs and adjectives/ncollocations that define each keyword. On the other hand, an argument analysis of the/nCatalan people declaration of sovereignty and of the independence referendum. The results/nshow a delegitimating anti-independence, highly critical of the process characters, and/nEuropean discourse which appeals to dialogue and consensus, under the Spanish/nconstitutional framework.
