The Coen Brothers not only adapt their films, they update topics, characters and structures from hard boiled thriller writers of their choice and transform them in a visual and narrative icon. That provides opportunities to study their films from a traductological point of view. This kind of translation is called intersemiotic, and it is usually in the shadow of the other two types. The motivation of this project is to give importance to th is kind of translation by analysing the si milarities and differences between Dashiell Hammett' s novels and Miller 's Crossing, written and directed by the Coen brothers. In this project, I present a comparative analysis of the topic, the structures, the characters and the language used in two of the main literary works by Hammett and the film. The results show that the Coen brothers take a lot of components from two of Hammett's books: Red Harvest and, especially, The Glass Key, but also from otther previous hard boiled stories. They also actualize some of the topics to adapt them to the contemporary audience, for example the role of the woman and the homosexuality. Ali these aspects, together with the study of previous theories of translation, allow us to prove that often what we call "cinematographic adaptations" are not really "adaptations", but " intersemiotic translations" and that what the Coen brothers usually do can be defined as " not limited in tersemiotic translations with a modernizing purpose", which needs to be further studied.Descripció
