Las cosas como son: estudio y propuesta de retraducción de Q.E.D., de Gertrude Stein, y comparación con la traducción publicada

Abstract

Este Trabajo de Fin de Postgrado pretende estudiar la vida y obra de Gertrude Stein, especialmente su novela Q.E.D.: Things as They Are, que se tradujo al castellano como Q.E.D.: Las cosas como son. Se trata de una historia autobiográfica que describe un triángulo amoroso entre tres mujeres escrita en 1903, pero que no vio la luz hasta 1950 y que no se tradujo al castellano hasta 1993. Este trabajo se basa en las ideas de la teoría de la traducción feminista y de la sociología de la traducción para explicar el contexto de recepción de la obra en los sistemas literarios anglosajón e hispano. Además, se presenta una propuesta de traducción propia de la primera parte de Q.E.D. al castellano, así como un análisis y justificación de dicha traducción y una comparación con la traducción publicada en 1993. El objetivo de este trabajo es demonstrar que una nueva traducción y publicación de Q.E.D. en castellano no es solo pertinente sino también necesaria debido al hecho de que la traducción publicada no se encuentra disponible hoy en día y al contexto de aceptación y diversidad que han propiciado en la actualidad los movimientos feminista y LGTBI. Por último, lo que se quiere demostrar es que Gertrude Stein debería ser objeto de estudio en literatura más a menudo y que Q.E.D. es un texto clave en el estudio de la literatura feminista y lesbiana a lo largo de la historia.This project focuses on the study of Gertrude Stein’s life and literary production and, more specifically, her early novel Q.E.D.: Things as They Are, which was translated into Spanish as Q.E.D.: Las cosas como son. This novel consists of an autobiographical story of a love triangle which involved three young women, it was written in 1903 but only published in 1950 and translated into Spanish in 1993. This research aims to use the ideas of feminist translation studies and sociological translation studies to explain the context of reception of that particular work both in the English-speaking and the Spanish speaking literary systems. Furthermore, this project will provide a translation proposal of Q.E.D.’s first part into Spanish and an analysis and justification of said translation along with a comparison between the proposed translation and the one that was published in 1993. The objective of this research is to prove that a new translation and publication of Q.E.D. in Spanish is not only relevant but necessary, given the fact that the first translation is not available nowadays, and the social context of acceptance and diversity that has been provided by the feminist and LGBTI movements. Ultimately, what is to be demonstrated is that Gertrude Stein should be more often the object of study in literature and that Q.E.D. is a key text in the study of feminist and lesbian literature across history.
