What’s the beef? Conduct estimation in the vertical U.S. beef supply chain

• dc.description.abstract Ongoing cartel cases against the largest four U.S. beef packers have once again brought the U.S. beef packing industry into the antitrust spotlight. This thesis uses a NEIO structural model to estimate the beef packers’ conduct in a vertical chain to disentangle market power exertion from exogenous supply and demand factors. We find significant estimates for the packers’ conduct parameters ranging from 0.047 to 0.194, with their Lerner Indices ranging from 0.019 to 0.080 in the alleged cartel period. These estimates indicate a change in conduct but provide no evidence of collusive behavior.
• dc.description.abstract Unos casos contra los cuatro empacadores de carne de res más grandes de EEUU han vuelto a poner atención antimonopólica a esta industria. Esta tesis utiliza un modelo estructural NEIO para evaluar la conducta de los empacadores en una cadena vertical, buscando aislar el ejercicio de poder de mercado frente a factores exógenos de oferta y demanda. Estimamos que los parámetros de conducta oscilan entre 0,047 y 0,194, y que los índices de Lerner oscilan entre 0,019 y 0,080 en el período. Estas estimaciones indican un cambio en la conducta, pero no aportan evidencia de colusión.
