Abstract

Ongoing cartel cases against the largest four U.S. beef packers have once again brought the U.S. beef packing industry into the antitrust spotlight. This thesis uses a NEIO structural model to estimate the beef packers’ conduct in a vertical chain to disentangle market power exertion from exogenous supply and demand factors. We find significant estimates for the packers’ conduct parameters ranging from 0.047 to 0.194, with their Lerner Indices ranging from 0.019 to 0.080 in the alleged cartel period. These estimates indicate a change in conduct but provide no evidence of collusive behavior.
