Abstract

Teaching a foreign language through an e-learning platform is a process that requires lengthy prior organization and planning. This process becomes more challenging when the goal is to make the contents of the course accessible to d/Deaf people, since the videos, as well as other materials need to not rely only on audio. In this MA thesis, the goal is to examine how online programs can become accessible to a broader audience through the creation of SDH for the first two videos of the MOOC titled “Catalan for Beginners” provided by Universitat Pompeu Fabra. To accomplish that, a framework is used which relies on the principal characteristics of Media Accessibility, and more specifically on SDH, and the focus is placed on the Spanish norm (AENOR, 2012). A longitudinal diary is also provided, which describes all of the materials presented throughout the duration of the MOOC as well as a definition of the concept of MOOCs with emphasis on foreign language and accessible MOOCs. Finally, the results regarding the use of colors and captions in the subtitles as well as activities in alternative formats are presented at the end alongside an annex with the SDH.
