Abstract

One of the great authors who advanced French literature of the 19th century is Théophile Gautier. Despite his importance and indisputable talent, recognized and praised by contemporaries and experts, he has not achieved the reputation he deserves. This work translated into Catalan L’oreiller d’une jeune fille, a fantasy story by Gautier published for the first time in 1845, which had not previously been translated into Catalan. It tells the story of Ninette, a seven-year-old girl who, one day, finds an unexpected gift from a mysterious woman on her bed: a magical cushion that, when whispered to when nobody else can hear, helps her to draw conclusions and build her own system of values. The purpose of this work is to offer the first Catalan version of this piece and thus contribute to the recognition of its author. The proposed translation has tried to respect the detail that characterises Gautier’s style and to be faithful to the delicacy with which he constructs the descriptive pauses. Subsequently, a commentary has been carried out on the difficulties derived from the translation process where some solutions to specific cases are presented. The goal of the commentary is to exemplify troublesome issues and offer readers a brief analysis of the translation proposal.
