dc.description.abstract | One of the most frequent assertions made by translation scholars is that translators learn/ntheir job by practising, although it is also stressed that they need to be able to reflect on/nthe process and justify their choices. Consequently, it is crucial to combine theory and/npractice. In this framework, the present bachelor thesis provides a Spanish translation of/nthe novel Summer in February (1995), written by Jonathan Smith, along with an/nanalysis of the most relevant aspects of the process and the source and target texts. The/nmain reason for selecting this topic was to allow me to provide new information and/nbuild upon my existing skills. Specifically, I was interested in working independently/nfor the first time with a long text, which had not been translated, about an artist, Alfred/nMunnings, who should be better known. I was also interested in working on a literary/ntranslation at least once. By using monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, translation/nhandbooks and articles, this dissertation aims to provide a faithful, accurate and/nidiomatic target text, as well as to identify key challenges and justify certain decisions./nThese goals ultimately serve to prove that relevant skills and knowledge, such as/ntranslation competence and proficiency in understanding English and English culture/nand writing in Spanish, have been internalised. These objectives take form in a/ntranslation and an analysis with examples about the translation of cultural references,/nwordplay and register in Summer in February. Overall, this paper shows the difficulties/nassociated with these elements of translation, along with the importance of paying/nattention to them. |
