The impact of Museum Translation on Linguistic Accessibility: a commented translation of Inmaculada Julián’s ‘La representación gráfica de las mujeres (1936-1938)’ for Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía’s microsite

Translation is an integral part of the museum industry as it facilitates knowledge exchange and acquisition through linguistic accessibility. The following project aims to contribute to such transmission through an English translation of Inmaculada Julián’s text ‘La representación gráfica de las mujeres (1936-1938)’, entitled ‘The Graphic Representation of Women (1936-1938)’. The text analyses the female representation through posters during the Spanish Civil War and currently forms part of the Frente y retaguardia: mujeres en la Guerra Civil collection at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. The proposed translation has been produced in the context of accessibility given that the collection’s microsite is available in both Spanish and English, yet it lacks English translations for its accompanying materials and texts. The source text itself presents numerous translation difficulties due to its dense cultural and historical context, intertextual references, and multimodality. Such issues will be discussed throughout the paper, as well as the appropriate translation theories and solutions that have been applied with the aim of creating an informative and accessible rendering of Julián’s text into English for potential usage in a museum context.
