Abstract

After his religious crisis in 1897, the Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno devoted himself to writing a series of works dealing with issues such as: death and immortality, God and religion, reason and feeling, despair and faith. However, all this issues are treated from a tragic perspective, form the agony, a struggle that for the philosopher represents the meaning life. His thinking must be understood within the context of “death of god”, which leads the writer in an agonic search of a saviour deity, revealing feeling and reason as two irreconcilables poles. Therefore, this essay, using Unamuno’s philosophical and poetical work, is set to analyse his impossible wish of immortality induced because he, as the mystic, feels the absence of God in the world.
