Abstract

There has always been a clear and visible male prominence in the phenomenon of football and its surrounding settings. However, due to the rise in popularity of female football, women's interest in the sport has significantly heightened in recent years. As a result, women are increasingly attending spaces where football is watched. Due to these environments being predominantly male, women attendees are exposed to a hyper-masculine culture in which a large number of men exhibit specific sexist behaviours. The goal of this research is to analyse, through a participant observation, the different sexist manifestations present in football watching settings. This allows a deeper understanding of the extent and way sexism is portrayed in football, which is essential for creating safe spaces for women to attend and participate in.
