Abstract

The aim of this work is to explore the characteristics of the collective identity in the late-feudal Kingdom of Valencia, that is, the period around the abolition of the Fueros by Felipe V on June 29, 1707. On the one hand, since its political creation, a feeling of Valencian belonging had been taking shape associated with the Kingdom's institutions and its laws, a process studied by authors such as Agustín Rubio Vela and Vicent Baydal, through the vocabulary and idioms used by witnesses of that time; remarkably the institutions. On the other hand, at the end of the feudal era, the Kingdoms of the Crown of Aragon had been part of the Monarchy of Spain for two centuries, with Castile as the main kingdom and seat of the King's Court. However, each kingdom retained its institutions and private laws, including currency and customs, so that although integrated into an empire, the ancient Catalan-Aragonese states will continue to preserve each of them their own political personality, knowing that they belonged to a dynastic conglomerate aeque principaliter; where formally all the kingdoms and lordships of the same monarch were equal and independent from each other. When the War of Succession arrived, the Crown of Castile remained largely loyal to the Bourbon candidate, Philip of Anjou, and the Crown of Aragon opted for the Habsburg, Archduke Charles of Austria. There is evidence of a patriotic outburst at the end of the conflict in Catalonia, which was already half occupied and was the last territory to resist the arms of the Two Bourbon Crowns. The Catalans had previously seen the repeal of the fueros for the Aragonese and the Valencians, and their collective identity was based above all on the laws of the land they wanted to preserve. In the Valencian Country, on the other hand, although the conflict is more than studied, notably by professor Carme Pérez Aparicio; there are no studies focused on the Valencian identity of the moment. The present work, aims to provide an identity radiography of the Kingdom of Valencia when it lost its self-government, partly by reviewing the political events of the time, and partly by paying attention to the political vocabulary used by contemporaries.
