    A case for rewriting Lolita.
(Jan Kochanowski University Press, 2024) Zabalbeascoa, Patrick
This paper calls for new versions, or rewritings (Lefevere 1992), of Nabokov’s 1955 (in)famous novel Lolita. The call is a reaction to the features found in Adrian Lyne’s 1997 film adaptation and the respective AVT versions of Lyne’s and Kubrick’s 1962 adaptations, which seem to support popular visions of Lolita that do not fit in with current sensitivities regarding the topic nor, it is argued, with a deeper, more careful reading of Nabokov’s work. For years, there have been calls for Lolita or some of its adaptations to be cancelled as indecent or immoral, while many of those who market the Lolita ‘brand’ do so from a very similar (smutty) interpretation of the story. This study sets out to show how Lolita can serve the purpose of denouncing child abuse and sexual exploitation, and there is ample textual evidence in the novel to prove it.

    The informational component: Ph.D. dissertation
(University of Pennsylvania, 1993) Vallduví, Enric
Even though the relevance of non-truth conditional notions like ‘topic’ and ‘focus’ in sentence structure and interpretation has long been recognized, there is little agreement on the exact nature of these notions and their role in a model of linguistic competence. Following the information packaging approach (Chafe 1976, Prince 1986), this study argues that these notions are primitive elements in the informational component of language. This component, informatics, is responsible for the articulation of sentences qua information, where information is defined as that part of propositional content which constitutes a contribution of knowledge to the hearer's knowledge-store. Informational primitives combine into four possible distinct information packaging instructions, which direct hearers to retrieve the information of a sentence and enter it into their knowledge-store in a specific way. After a discussion of previous approaches to the informational articulation of the sentence, a hierarchical articulation is proposed: sentences are divided into the focus, which is the only information of the sentence, and the ground, which specifies how that information fits in the hearer's knowledge-store. The ground is further divided into the link, which denotes an address in the hearer's knowledge-store under which s/he is instructed to enter the information, and the tail, which provides further directions on how the information must be entered under a given address. Empirical support for this representation of information packaging comes especially from the surface encoding of instructions in Catalan, which is then contrasted with that of English. Using a multistratal syntactic theory, it is then proposed that information packaging is structurally and purely represented at the abstract level of IS, which acts as an interface with informatics. Finally, in order to further argue for informatics as an autonomous linguistic component, some proposals that attempt to include informational notions under logical semantics are reviewed and countered. This study is an effort to gain insight into one subdomain of pragmatics by integrating it into the larger process of language understanding. This is done by giving otherwise elusive informational notions a specific role in the component responsible for the entry of information into the hearer's knowledge-store.

Learners' discourse needs in everyday-life written genres
(Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2019) Bach, Carme, 1971-; López Ferrero, Carmen; Martín Peris, Ernesto
Language learners’ discourse competence at a threshold (B1) level has not been empirically studied. Research is necessary to determine their degree of competence in different genres and to detect areas for improvement in discourse production. Everyday-life genres usually written at B1, such as (auto)biographies, are not sufficiently explained as sociocultural practices. For these reasons, we study a family (self-referential narrative one) of everyday-life written genres in a corpus comprising 18 autobiographies by learners of Catalan and 18 accounts of experiences by learners of Spanish. Different areas of learning needs are identified, related to three discourse dimensions: becoming aware of the literacy practice the learner is participating in (sociocultural dimension); making proper self-reference in the text and time-anchoring the events in it (pragmatic dimension); and adhering to the narrative structure (textual dimension). Though our results are in general agreement with previous studies on textual learning needs, we identify new problems on the sociocultural and pragmatic dimensions, thanks to our plurilingual and multidimensional discourse competence approach. We translate these needs into indicators of achievement that teachers can use with learners in a communicative assessment process. Our proposal helps to develop learning activities that both foster and assess plurilingual discourse competence.

Refining salience and the position of antecedent hypothesis: a study of Catalan pronouns
(University of Pennsylvania, 2010) Mayol, Laia
This paper investigates the referring preferences of null subject pronouns and overt subject pronouns in Catalan. In particular, it contributes the debate about whether the referring preferences of pronouns in null-subject languages are governed by syntactic factors or by information structure. A questionnaire experiment was performed, in which the word order of the experimental items (SVO vs OVS) was manipulated in order to distinguish syntactic and information structure factors. The results support a multiple-factor model of salience, in which grammatical as well as pragmatic function play a role and in which different forms are sensitive to different factors. Null pronouns refer to the most salient antecedent, which is always the subject, even if it is not the link of the sentence. In contrast, overt pronouns refer to non-salient antecedents (nonsubject, non-link antecedents), if there such an antecedent, and fail to show a clear preference otherwise.

The Trafilm Guide: how the trafilm database works and how to feed in more metadata into the system, with basic trafilm concepts
(2018-04) Zabalbeascoa Terran, Patrick; Sokoli, Stavroula
This document is the output of work which aims to provide a practical guide to help use the trafilm gallery as well as add new information, samples, and metadata, and even audiovisual files / clips. The purpose is to build a database of metadata for as many instances of multilingualism as possible as they appear in audiovisuals, basically, fictional feature films and TV series. The concept of multilingualism for trafilm is broad enough to include sign language and dialects and language which is different from the main language of the AV text because the speaker is somehow impeded or conditioned (e.g. non-native speaker, or intoxicated or somehow conditioned) as well as more commonly accepted forms of language variation such as foreign languages, ancient languages and made-up, or constructed, languages. Translation options include dubbing, subtitling (standard or SDH) and audio description. This document includes: • Concepts and definitions, a glossary and abbreviations • A detailed, faithful representation of the online gallery and forms • Explanations and specifications to help newcomers become familiar with how the system works • Some screenshots and illustrations to help visualise what is being referred to • Instructions on how to fill in the forms The order of the forms is important as it reflects the dependency relationship that exists between them, whereby the metadata provided for the higher-level form is automatically shared by all lower-level forms. The ultimate goal of trafilm is to provide a database as large as possible that can be accessed, used and continually developed and made to grow by all of those who carry out research into audiovisual translation or have a stake in the profession.
