• dc.description.abstract Using firm-level data from Spain, we investigate robot abandonment, a phenomenon neglected by the literature, and find that a substantial proportion of robot adoption is non-permanent. We also find that (i) firms are most likely to derobotize shortly after robotization; (ii) derobotization rates are higher among smaller firms; and (iii) labor demand falls after derobotization. We develop a model of reversible automation in which firms learn the costs of using robots only after they first adopt them. We simulate a panel of firms that match the data and demonstrate that analyses of automation which ignore abandonment can overestimate the effects of automation.ca
• dc.description.abstract Usando datos empresariales de España, investigamos el abandono de robots, un fenómeno ignorado por la literatura académica, y encontramos que una proporción substancial de la adopción robótica no es permanente. Identificamos que (i) las empresas son más probable de derobotizar (es decir, abandonar robots) inmediatamente después de robotizar; (ii) las empresas más pequeñas derobotizan más frecuentemente que las grandes; y (iii) la demanda de labor disminuye después de la derobotización. Postulamos un modelo de automatización reversible en cual las empresas aprenden el costo de usar robots solo después de adoptarlos por la primera vez. Simulamos un panel de empresas cual empareja con los datos y demuestra que el análisis que ignora el abandono regularmente sobrestima los efectos de automatización.es
