BARCELONA, THE SEA, AND THE WORLD : THE «PROTESTS AGAINST THE SEA» IN 1868

Abstract

Between 1766 and 1868, close to 25,000 protests against the sea were filed at the Consulate of Commerce in Barcelona. By focusing on the 325 depositions extant at the ACA for the year 1868, this article contextualizes these documents within the city’s history. They become a lens through which to examine the nature of Barcelona trade, changes in the provisioning of the city, its march towards modernity, new seafaring technologies, Barcelona’s global trade, and the city’s enduring ties to the sea.
