This paper analyses these effects and takes into accountRussian and Western approaches to the evolution of mass media and the profession ofjournalism in the post-Soviet period. Based on the four fundamental principles of mediaethics (Alsius, 1999) truth, freedom, justice and responsibility this paperanalyses how these principles have been observed since the fall of the USSR, it identifies the codes and agreements between the various communication media over this periodand it outlines the media events that have had most impact on the debate concerningethical behaviour in the communication media in Russia.
