Abstract

This pioneering study addresses the implications of relocating the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix from Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to the IFEMA Madrid circuit, considering the increasing globalization of the sport and advances in logistics management. The main objective is to determine the most suitable circuit to host the event and to evaluate the viability of Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to maintain its place in the calendar. The project represents a milestone in the field of sports research by conducting the first comparative analysis of the advantages and challenges associated with each venue. Building on previous studies, the use of relevant theoretical frameworks, and empirical analysis, a new model is constructed to address the present and future scenarios of both circuits. In order to conduct a detailed examination, technical, logistical, and economic details are studied. For the logistical analysis, the model of Herold et al. (2020) is used, with an emphasis on the logistical management of venues, equipment, media, and athletes. For the economic-financial study, the I/O data published by the Circuit, the Gabinet d'Estudis Econòmics, and the projections of the IFEMA circuit are analyzed. The results obtained show Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as a strong contender, with a long history in the automotive world, a consolidated infrastructure, and an undeniable influence in the region, contributing 0,3% to GDP and employment. Likewise, the IFEMA Madrid circuit is presented as a solid alternative, with an ambitious project supported by private investors, an innovative and sustainable design, and a substantial growth forecast in revenue, occupancy, and international visibility for Madrid. In conclusion, this study highlights the critical role of logistics in the global expansion of F1 and the strategic considerations influencing the future of the Spanish GP organization. Ultimately, this research offers valuable insights into the dynamic world of motorsport events, assisting in future strategic decision-making and fostering innovation within the F1 landscape.
