Abstract

Winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games is the greatest aspiration of any athlete. Even so, only a few manage to achieve the prized Olympic glory. Talent, physical conditions, effort, and practice are necessary to achieve this goal, but the country of origin also determines their chances of winning a gold Olympic medal. This paper examines which variables determine national performance in the 21st century Olympic Games, from Sydney 2000 to Tokyo 2020. While previous studies have identified the importance of economic development and population, this study focuses on the role of gender equality as a determinant of the Olympic gold medals won by a country. Using a mixed methodology of quantitative and qualitative analysis, it is concluded that countries with positive indicators of gender equality are more likely to boost their Olympic success.
