Abstract

Being container ships one of the major sources of NOx and SOx emissions generated by maritime trade, the IMO 2020 regulation was designed to reduce them. In order to identify how are the major shipping companies overcoming its challenges, a comparative analysis has been conducted between Maersk, MSC, COSCO, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd. As the study shows, Maersk, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd are the companies making further moves towards environmentally friendly policies in the long-term, while COSCO has only focused on short-term initiatives. MSC is in between, investing in actions that may not be the best choice for the future regulation updates.
