Resum
For this paper, I have chosen to analyze metaphors in newspaper articles related to the ‘Calais Jungle’. The reason I chose this topic is that the ‘Calais Jungle’ dismantling happened recently, in late 2016. Although it may seem easy to find metaphors and compare them, the truth is that we do not realize that they are part of our daily language, which makes them difficult to find. The aim of this writing is to analyze metaphors in the French and Spanish press in order to see if there are similarities or differences between both languages. In addition, this paper will prove the competences acquired during Translation studies. In this article, I will show corpus data identifying different types of metaphors grouped in different semantic fields as well as establishing similarities between both corpus. Then, I will present results showing their abundance in both languages and state that most of them are almost the same, with minor differences. Nevertheless, the findings show that depending on what type of newspaper are we reading, we will find more pejorative terminology related to the ‘Calais Jungle’ or its inhabitants than others. This paper will demonstrate how both cultures are not as remote as we think because evidence shows many similarities between them. Finally, I aim to demonstrate how words are not as innocent as we believe: how they always have an intention behind them, especially when the press use them to persuade their readers.Descripció
