Abstract

By 2050, the world's population is expected to reach 9.8 billion people of which 70% will live in urban centres, and cities already consume 75% of the world's energy and generate 60% of greenhouse gases. Smart Cities take advantage of new digital and ICT technologies to address great challenges such as population growth or sustainability. This research project examines, from a public policy perspective, the design and implementation of Smart City initiatives for three selected cities: Singapore, Copenhagen and San Francisco. The objective is to analyse how these initiatives vary in a global context and which factors contribute to their success. Key dimensions analysed include technological infrastructure, management frameworks, funding mechanisms, stakeholder engagement, cultural contexts, scalability and environmental factors. The study concludes by contrasting the similarities and differences through a comparative analysis and aims to provide a comprehensive view for social and political actors to develop strategies for smarter, more sustainable and more liveable urban environments.
