Abstract

Per la centralitat del camp semàntic de l’olfacte, els fraseologismes olfactoris juguen un paper considerable en la novel∙la El perfum, història d’un assassí (1985) de l’escriptor alemany Patrick Süskind. L’objectiu de l’article és investigar els mecanismes que l’autor fa servir per evocar el món dels olors, i d’examinar quina funció hi tenen els fraseologismes olfactoris. L’anàlisi se centra en els fraseologismes amb els lexemes nas, olorar, fer pudor, tot determinant la seva correspondència en la traducció al català. Finalment, es descriuen les estratègies que utilitza la traductora Judith Vilar per compensar les diferències estructurals entre les dues llengües a nivell textual.
Given the importance of the semantic field of smell in the novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, by the German writer Patrick Süskind, olfactory phraseologisms play a central role. The aim of the article is to explore the mechanisms used by the author to evoke a sensory world of smell. We determine the function of olfactory phraseologisms in the construction of this world and analyse how phraseologisms including lexemes nose, to smell, to stink are rendered in the Catalan translation. We then examine which strategies the translator Judith Vilar employs in order to counteract the structural differences between the two languages at a textual level.
