New technologies have triggered a revolution in retail, but personalizing the shopping experience is still a pending issue. Due to indoor limitations, locating individuals inside a commercial area with classical Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) can be challenging. However, the incipient Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) is a suitable bet for this purpose. We implement a RTLS Engine using Mobile Knowledge’s UWB Mobile Kit, that uses Double-Sided Two-Way Ranging to obtain distance approximations of a smartphone tag with respect to an anchor. Given these distances and the anchor positions, new tag positions are estimated. Tag movement is reflected through a graphical interface. All data managed is stored in an updated database. Position estimation is done by optimization (minimizing an error function), that shows higher accuracy in real scenarios. Using a greater number of anchors increases the accuracy of results. Moreover, the anchor data reception frequency decreases when the tag remains static.
