Abstract

This thesis traces the development of a mutually beneficial relationship between the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), Libya and the Republic of Ireland during the ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland known as ‘The Troubles’ (1969–1998). It argues that this ‘love triangle’ emerged from a convergence of personal, economic and ideological interests between Ireland and Libya, culminating in the Republic knowingly maintaining trade with a regime that transformed the PIRA from a small paramilitary into a true army that Britain could not defeat. Central to this story is the role of the traditional republican party Fianna Fáil, whose alignment with expanding agricultural and aviation pressure groups helped make Libya the Republic’s fourthlargest export market by the 1980s. In doing so, it offers a nuanced perspective on The Troubles, demonstrating how a little-known trade and terrorist relationship prolonged the conflict, while illuminating deep tensions between Ireland’s economic interests and its moral responsibilities.
