Abstract

The present paper is an analysis of the cinematographic adaptation of J. K. Rowling's book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The main motivation for the study is the interest towards the work in two registers: the literary register, and the audiovisual register. The analysis of the work in both registers has been made through the elaboration of a theoretical framework which includes information on the fantastic and the adventure's genders, and on the process of cinematographic adaptation of books. Starting from the hypothesis that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a work which will contain elements of these two literary genders, an exposition can be seen on the ways in which each register has expressed their characteristic features. Furthermore, the investigation of the audiovisual camp and the process of cinematographic adaptation of literature provides insight in the possibilities of the register, and explains the changes or differences that can be seen in the comparison with the literary text. In the part of the analysis, the confluences and the differences between the two registers are descibed in detail, and there's an explanation of the effects that these might produce in the receptors of the work. Cinematographic adaptation has been judged for its lack of fidelity towards the literary text in which it is based, but we will see that this is not the case for the analyzed work.
