Conceptualizaciones del espacio ibérico: posibles aportaciones para los Estudios de Traducción

Abstract

This chapter offers a review of the different conceptualizations that have been made of the Iberian cultural space from Iberian Studies and Translation Studies. Without invalidating the idea of the (macro-)polysystem, a recurrent notion used to refer to the Iberian space and to its relational nature in both fields, we propose to apply the concept of “translation zone” to define this space of cultural, literary and linguistic interaction that is characterized, among others, by the intensity and polymorphism of its translation practices. We thus argue that this new conceptualization can be productive for the study of translation and, particularly, with regards to the history of translation in the Iberian Peninsula, understood as an entangled history that would allow us to trace the contacts and exchanges between the different Iberian cultures and literatures that occur through translation.
