- dc.description.abstract Cockney rhyming slang has acquired in modern times the status of a tourist attraction/nfor those who visit London, and has reached an unexpected popularity through its/nappearance in several commercial movies. There exists, however, a serious lack of more/nin-depth studies of the social characteristics of this slang. When analyzing it more/nclosely, it appears clear that the creators and users of this jargon are all too often, and/nalmost exclusively, men. Furthermore, the communicative acts carried out in Cockney/nrhyming slang involve predominantly male actors, in situations that seem to appeal to a/nhomogeneous masculine audience. This uniformity influences both the vocabulary and/nthe social projections that the users of this language recreate, making this rhyming slang/na vehicle for strongly patriarchal ideals in which women hold an undeniably lower,/nwhen not an invisible, position. This research carried out the analysis of three songs,/nthree commercial films and one autobiographical novel in which Cockney rhyming/nslang appeared, and was able to identify the main characteristics that render Cockney/nrhyming slang a tool for the perpetuation of male-dominated social representations. This/nstudy aimed at widening the otherwise still quite narrow interest and knowledge in the/nsocial characteristics of the Cockney rhyming slang.en
