Resum
This is a brief study on contemporary practices of sound and listening among the Geraizeiros, a traditional rural population of Central Brazil. Drawing on the ideas of sound transduction and sonic memory, I analyze the role of local technological increment, in general, and of audiovisual production and circulation, in particular, within contemporary processes of production and affirmation of “Geraizeiro tradition”. My discussion focuses on how, by reviving, resignifying, and sonically mediating erstwhile extinct or endangered soundmarks and sound practices, the Geraizeiros affirm and perform their traditionality. Furthermore, I analyze in which ways newly introduced technologies of sound, such as smartphones and loudspeakers, have become an essential tool in the promotion, diffusion and resignification of allegedly traditional practices. Finally, I discuss their performances of traditionality in relation to Geraizeiro contemporary environmental and sociopolitical agendas.Col·leccions
