Abstract

A common fact in our society is to hear in the streets how men call out or flatter unknown women. Although traditionally it has been an accepted behavior, these forms of flattery are a form of street verbal harassment towards women. The purpose of this research is studying the prevalence of this phenomenon in Barcelona and describing its main characteristics. To carry out the study, a survey about this type of behavior was carried out to a total amount of 165 people (127 women and 38 men). The results of the investigation have shown that the majority of the survey respondents consider that behaviors such as making different sounds or flattery comments are a form of street verbal harassment and that the people who suffer most from these harassments are women. It has also highlighted that generally the aggressors are men and demonstrates that the victims' clothes and the time are not risk factors. Finally, it has allowed us to notice that street verbal harassment does not have serious repercussions for most women, but it does create negative feelings and, therefore, most of women would like verbal street harassment to be a sanctionable behavior.
