Abstract

In German, compounding is one of the most common linguistic mechanisms to create new words. However, hardly any attention has been given to words compounded by two adjectives (adjective compounds). The main purpose of this article is to examine the formation of these types of compound words from a semantic point of view in order to draft a proposal of a semantic classification. To do so, adjective compounds from a corpus (COSMAS Corpus) were obtained to identify and generalize the possible combinations between adjectives. Finally, I analyze these adjectives in terms of semantics (based on the semantic classification of Duden’s grammar) and I propose a classification based on the three main groups of adjectives: relational, qualifying and participial.
