Item type: Item , Reshaping sports journalism through innovation: an analysis of L'Équipe explore's strategies, practices and output(Taylor & Francis, 2024) Ramon, Xavier; Rojas Torrijos, José Luis; Tulloch, Christopher DavidSports journalism practice faces important challenges deriving from the multiplication of platforms, the acceleration of workflows, the emergence of new entrants and the audiences' shifting consumption habits. In a bid to overcome those challenges and advance innovation across the board, the French newspaper L'Équipe established a specific unit for that purpose: Explore. By focusing on this case study, this research has examined the formats, output and practices deployed by Explore and evaluated its impact within L'Équipe's offer. The study is informed by content analysis performed on the projects (N=201) published by Explore over a 32-month timeframe (May 2021-December 2023), ethnographic work and eight semi-structured interviews with its employees. Findings reveal that Explore stands out as a leading "media lab" in sports journalism. Through a broad range of formats and a multifaceted agenda, Explore occupies a unique position in terms of delivering cultural capital. Explore embraces alternative production modes that invest in freedom and research while rejecting hyper-accelerated cycles and clickbait-oriented approaches. Such proposition has resonated with audiences and positioned Explore as a cornerstone of L'Équipe's commercial strategy. Solutions articulated by Explore contribute to the broader discussion of how sports journalism practice can be reshaped in the digital age.
Item type: Item , Peer governance practices: an alternative approach to the education of young people in vulnerable contexts(Taylor & Francis, 2025) Palacios Esparza, María José ; Arciniega Cáceres, Mittzy; Figueras Maz, MònicaThis paper presents the experience of 6 months of work (January to June 2022) with educators and young people aged 16-18 years from a socio-educational organisation in Raval, a vulnerable neighbourhood of Barcelona. It explores how peer governance practices could help young people to acquire conflict resolution skills. It also analyses the role of adults in the application of these practices, thus furthering the understanding of peer governance as a practice that enables people to co-decide, set limits by establishing specific rules and co-manage conflicts [Kostakis, V. (2010). Peer governance and Wikipedia: Identifying and understanding the problems of Wikipedia's governance. First Monday, 15(3)]. An action research methodology was developed for this purpose, based on the application and analysis of participatory workshops and ethnographic work. The results show how the process helps adolescents acquire conflict resolution skills in areas such as negotiation of interests, reaching consensus and distribution of roles. It also identifies how educators overestimate the need for an adult mediator. This article is part of a case study that was conducted in the framework of the Horizon 2020 project SMOOTH that explores educational commons as a catalyst for reversing social inequalities among young people in vulnerable contexts.

Item type: Item , Media ownership and transparency in Spain: an analysis of ownership patterns and regulatory challenges(Universidad de Navarra, 2025) Parrilla Guix, Ricard ; Pérez-Altable, Laura; Rodríguez Martínez, Ruth, 1976- ; Mauri, Marcel, 1977-Media ownership concentration and transparency have become critical issues in Spain, especially as recent regulatory efforts aim to enhance accountability and media pluralism. This study explores the implications of concentrated and opaque ownership structures for editorial independence. It assesses the interplay of ownership concentration, ownership transparency, political affiliations, and financialisation and analyses the role played by Spanish regulatory agencies and media laws. Drawing on a sample of 31 Spanish media outlets - including public and private entities across television, radio, print, and digital media outlets - the study identifies four central ownership patterns: concentration, complex ownership structures, internationalisation, and financialisation. The findings indicate that a small group of dominant conglomerates, notably Grupo Planeta, Mediaset España, Grupo PRISA, and Grupo Vocento, exercise substantial control over the media landscape, raising concerns about media ownership pluralism. There are also significant gaps in the regulatory framework, particularly regarding ownership transparency, although recent legislative changes have made progress. Against this backdrop, further regulation is necessary to counteract ownership concentration, bolster media independence, and sustain a diverse and accountable media environment. In light of these ongoing changes, this study highlights the critical need for continued regulatory evolution to address persistent challenges in Spain's media landscape, ensuring alignment with European standards and fostering a more transparent, diverse, and resilient media ecosystem.

Item type: Item , Journalistic self-regulation for equality: the role of gender editing in Spain(Taylor & Francis, 2023) Iranzo-Cabrera, Maria; Figueras Maz, Mònica ; Mauri de los Ríos, MarcelDespite journalisms commitment to ethical principles such as accuracy, humanity and diversity, compliance with the gender perspective in content is still minimal in approximately one hundred countries. This inequality reinforces misperceptions, imbalances, and perceived differences between men and women. To address this situation, from 2010 to 2021, eight Spanish media companies appointed a new editorial position responsible for self-regulating gender equality. This qualitative study focused on 10 journalists who currently exercise or have exercised that job, to detect, describe and propose the implementation of this new professional role. This study suggests that gender editing has advanced equality in parity of sourcing and the presence of women in the opinion sections, but implementation of equality in overall content is more difficult. Gender editors' daily work is hampered by a lack of management support and an absence of independence in editorial decisions.
Item type: Item , Social value analysis: the case of Pompeu Fabra University(Emerald, 2020) Ayuso Siart, Silvia; Sánchez Hidalgo, Pablo J.; Retolaza, José Luis; Figueras Maz, MònicaPurpose This paper aims to explore how to quantify the social value generated by higher education from a social accounting perspective. The proposed approach is integrated social value (ISV) analysis, a social accounting model that considers both the economic value and the social value created by an organisation for its stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach The ISV analysis has been applied to Pompeu Fabra University, following a participatory action research process with representatives of the university and its stakeholders. Findings The final ISV includes not only the social value created through the university's economic activity - captured by economic and financial accounting indicators - but also the specific social value created for the different stakeholders by means of non-market relationships, which were monetised through the use of indicators and financial proxies. Research limitations/implications Like other social accounting methodologies, ISV analysis suffers from some limitations regarding data availability and economic pricing, that partly will be resolved with maturation of the methodology and increasing standardisation. Practical implications By using appropriate proxies, the non-market value of the university can be monetised and integrated with university's market value. The social value results become a valuable tool for developing useful indicators for internal management and external communication. Social implications The process of measuring the social value created by universities provides a way to meet the rising demands for greater accountability and transparency and facilitates engagement with stakeholders on how these institutions are contributing to a sustainable society. Originality/value ISV is a recently proposed social accounting model that combines an organisation's economic and social results into a single concept of value creation and thus contributes to advance the field of social accounting.
Item type: Item , Flores and ‘Tijeras’: a feminist revindication of Quechua and indigenous women through a fusion of Andean-trap music(Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, 2021) Álvarez-Cueva, Priscila; Sousa, SofiaThis article explores the song ‘Tijeras’, by Renata Flores, with the aim of identifying how the narrative of the message is constructed in the song, what elements accompany the representation and how they dialogue. To do this, the authors carry out an in-depth reading (Buonanno, 1999) where they identify five areas that allow us to understand the song as a weapon of protest and vindication, not only of indigenous women but also of the quechua language. In doing so, the article discusses the fusion Renata Flores makes between the mountains, the street, and the musical genre, while promoting a feminist message of union to face gender violence. In addition, the authors discuss the difference in cosmopolitanism that the artist projects, which in turn vindicates the representation of the indigenous Quechua-speaking woman. In general, the results suggest that the song ‘Tijeras’ contributes to the oral and musical transmission of Quechua, while promoting revolutionary and feminist ideals that connect with young audiences, to encourage identification processes that contribute to the elimination of violence against women, in general, and minority groups such as the indigenous, in particular.
Item type: Item , Can't stop scrolling! Adolescents' patterns of TikTok use and digital well-being self-perception(Springer, 2024) Virós Martín, Clara ; Montaña Blasco, Mireia ; Jiménez Morales, MònikaDigital well-being, which refers to a balanced individual experience of digital consumption, has been gaining attention recently in the study of the effects of digital technology use. Social networks are central in debates over digital well-being, as social media overuse is often identified as a primary issue. Teenagers who spend an average of three hours daily on social media especially draw the attention of researchers. Based on statistical evidence, TikTok is the most popular network among young users worldwide. However, there are not many platform-specific studies on its effects on adolescent well-being. One of the most consistent gaps is the lack of research on how different aspects involved in TikTok use impact adolescents' digital well-being on the app. In light of this, the study aimed to explore the relationship between time spent on TikTok, content consumption, and self-perception of digital well-being. Given the scientific consensus on social media's greater impact on girls, this study also sought to examine gender differences. For that purpose, a quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted with 737 Spanish adolescents aged 12 to 18, who completed an online questionnaire with validated scales and items on daily usage time, type of content consumption, and digital well-being. Results showed significant gender differences in TikTok usage and content consumption: girls spent more time on TikTok and notably engaged more with beauty and fashion content, while boys with video games and sports content, suggesting that traditional gender roles are still present in their choices of content consumption. Beyond that, a rather positive self-perception of digital well-being on TikTok by teenagers was observed. Despite this, an increased TikTok usage was associated with a reduced ability to set boundaries and limit their time on the app. These findings highlight the need for measures to limit the time adolescents spend on TikTok, such as mandatory parental controls on electronic devices and educational programs aimed at promoting healthy digital habits.
Item type: Item , Risk-adapted breast screening for women at low predicted risk of breast cancer: an online discrete choice experiment(SAGE Publications, 2024) Kelley Jones, Charlotte; Scott, Suzanne; Pashayan, Nora; Morris, Stephen; Okan, Yasmina; Waller, JoBackground A risk-stratified breast screening program could offer low-risk women less screening than is currently offered by the National Health Service. The acceptability of this approach may be enhanced if it corresponds to UK women's screening preferences and values. Objectives To elicit and quantify preferences for low-risk screening options. Methods Women aged 40 to 70 y with no history of breast cancer took part in an online discrete choice experiment. We generated 32 hypothetical low-risk screening programs defined by 5 attributes (start age, end age, screening interval, risk of dying from breast cancer, and risk of overdiagnosis), the levels of which were systematically varied between the programs. Respondents were presented with 8 choice sets and asked to choose between 2 screening alternatives or no screening. Preference data were analyzed using conditional logit regression models. The relative importance of attributes and the mean predicted probability of choosing each program were estimated. Results Participants (N = 502) preferred all screening programs over no screening. An older starting age of screening, younger end age of screening, longer intervals between screening, and increased risk of dying had a negative impact on support for screening programs (P < 0.01). Although the risk of overdiagnosis was of low relative importance, a decreased risk of this harm had a small positive impact on screening choices. The mean predicted probabilities that risk-adapted screening programs would be supported relative to current guidelines were low (range, 0.18 to 0.52). Conclusions A deintensified screening pathway for women at low risk of breast cancer, especially one that recommends a later screening start age, would run counter to women's breast screening preferences. Further research is needed to enhance the acceptability of offering less screening to those at low risk of breast cancer.
Item type: Item , A feminist economic approach to the Spanish and Italian economic press during the state of alarm for covid(Hipatia Press, 2025) Oliveras, Ester; Muñoz Puig, Marina ; Figueras Maz, Mònica ; Medina Bravo, Pilar, 1966-The consequences of the pandemic have shone a spotlight on the current economic system, often formulated as a dichotomy between life and the economy. This article analyses opinion articles published in the Italian and Spanish economic press during the state of alarm in Spring 2020, applying a gender and a feminist economics approach. The research was organised in two phases. In the first phase, quantitative analysis was applied to a sample of 1,284 opinion articles from leading economic blogs and newspapers in the Italian and Spanish press. In the second phase, qualitative content analysis was performed to explore the incorporation of gender or feminist economics. The results indicate an over-representation of male authors in both countries and a low percentage of gender perspective indicators. Except for inclusive language, both countries follow similar patterns: a relative presence of indicators of gender economics and little incorporation of indicators characteristic of feminist economics.
Item type: Item , The role of confidence and knowledge in intentions to (not) seek care for hypertension: evidence from a national survey(SAGE Publications, 2023) Bruine de Bruin, Wändi ; Okan, Yasmina; Krishnamurti, Tamar; Huffman, Mark D.Background. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, patients may lack confidence in their understanding of what constitutes normal/healthy blood pressure, potentially affecting intentions to seek necessary care. The American Heart Association defines normal/healthy blood pressure as <120/80 mm Hg, with a 130/80 mm Hg threshold for hypertension diagnosis. Methods. Our US sample (N=6,592) included 1342 adults with hypertension alone, and 795 with hypertension and relevant comorbidities (heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus). We assessed confidence in understanding blood pressure numbers, knowledge of thresholds for normal/healthy blood pressure (“normal or healthy blood pressure is below…”’; counting 120-130/80 mm Hg as correct), and intentions to seek care for randomly assigned blood pressure readings of 142/91(stage 2 hypertension), 132/69 (stage 1 hypertension), or 118/78 mm Hg (normal/healthy blood pressure). Results. Among non-hypertensive participants, 55% expressed confidence in their understanding of blood pressure numbers but only 36% knew the upper thresholds for normal/healthy blood pressure. Among participants with hypertension alone, 78% were confident while 47% were knowledgeable. Among participants with hypertension and comorbidities, 81% were confident and 40% were knowledgeable. Participants who were confident (vs. not) were more likely to express intentions to act on stage 2 hypertension readings but less likely to express intentions to act on stage 1 readings, even after adjustment for knowledge, hypertension diagnosis and sociodemographics. Limitations. Confidence, knowledge, and intentions were each measured with one question. Conclusions. Independent of knowledge, confidence was associated with greater willingness to act on stage 2 hypertension readings, but reduced willingness to act on stage 1 hypertension readings. Interventions aiming to improve hypertension care-seeking behavior should improve confidence in accurate knowledge.
