First, we offer a translation into Spanish of a specialised text written originally in German on the topic of Spanish language history. Second, we provide an analysis in which we comment on difficulties experienced while translating the selected chapter. The chosen source text is a chapter of the book Spanische Sprache im 19. Jahrhundert (‘Spanish language in the 19th century’; 1997) by Jenny Brumme. In the commentary, we analyse translation strategies regarding grammatical, syntactic and morphological elements such as the passive voice and nominalisation. As it is a specialised text particular attention is paid to the translation of terminology. Differences in text cohesion between German and Spanish are also highlighted. Our findings confirm some of the typical aspects that are troublesome for the translator and also provide some points which are not generally included in translation handbooks. Moreover, this paper may serve as a guide for translating specialised German texts into Spanish.application/pdfspaAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 SpainSpanische Sprache im 19.
