We combine data on environmental policy at the country level with data on pollution intensity at the industry level to show that countries with laxer environmental regulation have a comparative advantage in polluting industries. Further, we address the potential problem of reverse causality. We propose an instrument for environmental regulation based on meteorological determinants of pollution dispersion identied by the atmospheric pollution literature. We find that the effect of environmental regulation on the pattern of trade is causal and comparable in magnitude to the effect of physical and human capital.application/pdfengL'accés als continguts d'aquest document queda condicionat a l'acceptació de les condicions d'ús establertes per la següent llicència Creative CommonsSources of comparative advantage in polluting industries<resourceType xmlns="http://datacite.org/schema/kernel-3" resourceTypeGeneral="Other">info:eu-repo/semantics/workingPaper</resourceType><subject xmlns="http://datacite.org/schema/kernel-3" subjectScheme="keyword">international trade</subject><subject xmlns="http://datacite.org/schema/kernel-3" subjectScheme="keyword">environmental regulation</subject><subject xmlns="http://datacite.org/schema/kernel-3" subjectScheme="keyword">comparative advantage</subject><subject xmlns="http://datacite.org/schema/kernel-3" subjectScheme="keyword">air pollution.</subject><subject xmlns="http://datacite.org/schema/kernel-3" subjectScheme="keyword">Macroeconomics and International Economics</subject><rights xmlns="http://datacite.org/schema/kernel-3">info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess</rights>
