Abstract

Under very specific pressures, evolution turns extremely convergent, to the extent that distantly-related organisms show highly similar morphological, physiological and behavioral adaptations. Life into the perpetual darkness of caves is an obvious case of convergent evolution, epitomized by loss of vision among other common phenotypes. In compensation, extra-optic sensory systems are modified in order to perceive essential information from the environment. This doctoral thesis explores the genomic basis of subterranean adaptations and their evolution, characterizing and comparing the gene repertoire of different Coleoptera lineages. These study systems represent phylogenetically-distinct replicas of evolution underground, both in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The evolution of the chemosensory system will be the principal object of study, nevertheless, genome-wide comparisons between surface-dwelling and subterranean species that belong to independent lineages will also shed light into the origin of the subterranean phenotype and the extent of parallel and convergent evolution in cave-dwelling beetles.
Sota pressions molt específiques, l'evolució resulta extremadament convergent, fins al punt que organismes poc relacionats mostren adaptacions morfològiques, fisiològiques i comportamentals molt similars. La vida a la foscor perpètua de les coves és un cas evident d'evolució convergent, personificada per la pèrdua de visió entre altres fenotips comuns. Com a compensació, els sistemes sensorials extra-òptics experimenten modificacions per tal de percebre la informació essencial de l’ambient. Aquesta tesi doctoral explora les bases genòmiques d’adaptacions subterrànies i la seva evolució, caracteritzant i comparant el repertori genètic de diferents llinatges de coleòpters. Aquests sistemes d’estudi representen rèpliques filogenèticament diferenciades de l'evolució sota terra, tant en hàbitats aquàtics com terrestres. L'evolució del sistema quimiosensorial serà el principal objecte d'estudi, no obstant, mitjançant comparacions a tot el genoma entre especies superficials i subterrànies que pertanyen a llinatges independents també s’aclarirà l'origen del fenotip subterrani i l'extensió del evolució paral·lela i convergent en escarabats cavernícoles.
