Abstract

Since 2011, Latin America has experienced an unprecedented wave of socio-political upheaval, marked by widespread anti- establishment protests. This dissertation investigates this protest wave, highlighting its istinctiveness fom the anti- neo liberal protest cycle during the 1990s and 2000s, while situating it within the broader context on the "new global wave of social protests." The first chapter maps the contemporary protest landscape in Latin America using a cross-national, sequential comparative methodology, employing rotest Event Analysis (PEA). The second chapter develops a conceptual famework to understand this anti-establishment protest wave, focusing on significant protests in Chile, Brazil, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, with moderate activity in Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, and Panama, and limited occurrences in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Mexico. The third chapter utilizes Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to identify the combinations ofcausal conditions driving these mobilizations. This interdisciplinary research enhances understanding of Latin American protests and their global resonances, contributing to discussions on democracy, protest dynamics, and institutional resilience.
Desde 2011, América Latina ha experimentado una ola de agitación sociopolítica sin precedentes, marcada por extensas protestas anti-establishment. Esta tesis investiga dicha ola de protestas, destacando su carácter distintivo respecto al ciclo de protestas antineoliberal de finales de los años 90 e inicios de los 2000, situándola dentro del contexto más amplio de la "nueva ola global de protestas sociales". El primer capítulo examina el panorama contemporáneo de protestas en América Latina mediante una metodología comparativa secuencial y transnacional, empleando el Análisis de Eventos de Protesta (PEA). El segundo capítulo desarrolla un marco conceptual para entender esta ola de protestas anti- establishment, enfocándose en protestas significativas en Chile, Brasil, Nicaragua y Venezuela, con actividad moderada en Colombia, Perú, Guatemala y Panamá, y ocurrencias limitadas en República Dominicana, Honduras, Costa Rica y México. El tercer capítulo utiliza el Análisis Comparativo Cualitativo (QCA) para identificar las combinaciones de condiciones causales que impulsan estas movilizaciones. Esta investigación interdisciplinaria mejora la comprensión de las protestas en América Latina y sus implicaciones globales, contribuyendo a debates sobre democracia, dinámica de las protestas y resiliencia institucional.
