Abstract

Oscillations at theta frequency (4-7 Hz) have been hypothesized to play an important functional role in brain processes associated to working memory. In this thesis, I investigate how the systematic manipulation of different features of theta activity, such as its frequency or phase, is related to capacity and overall performance of visual working memory in humans. The first study employed sensory entrainment to explore how up-regulating and down-regulating endogenous theta frequency affects working memory capacity. The second study focused on the relationship between arousal, visual working memory performance, and individual participant traits. In the final study, phase-resetting stimuli were used in conjunction with electroencephalography to examine whether the power of pre-stimulus theta oscillations and their phase can account for variability in visual working memory performance. Collectively, the findings from these studies support the notion that various properties of endogenous theta activity, including its frequency, power, and phase, can influence visual working memory capacity and performance in humans.
S’ha hipotetitzat que les oscil·lacions en la freqüència theta (4-7 Hz) tenen un important paper funcional en els processos cerebrals relacionats amb la memòria de treball. En aquesta tesi, investigo com la manipulació sistemàtica de diferents característiques de l'activitat theta, com ara la freqüència o la fase, es relaciona amb la capacitat i el rendiment global de la memòria de treball visual en humans. Al primer estudi fa servir l’ “entrainment” (o encarrilament, en la seva traducció literal) sensorial per explorar com la regulació a l'alça i a la baixa de la freqüència theta endògena afecta la capacitat de la memòria de treball. El segon estudi es va centrar en la relació entre el nivell d’alerta, el rendiment de la memòria de treball visual, i els trets individuals dels participants. En l'últim estudi d’aquesta tesi, amb mesures electrofisiològiques, es va emprar el “phase reset” (o reinici de fase) per examinar si la potència de les oscil·lacions theta prèvies a l’estímul i la seva fase poden explicar la variabilitat en el rendiment de la memòria de treball visual. En conjunt, els resultats d'aquests estudis donen suport a la idea que diverses propietats de l'activitat theta endògena, incloent-ne la freqüència, potència i fase, poden influir en la capacitat i el rendiment de la memòria de treball visual en humans.
