Abstract

This thesis aims to study the relationship between fertility and subjective wellbeing in a sample of Australian couples (source: HILDA 2001-2009), followed from the year of the pregnancy with the first child. In particular, I focus on whether the arrival of the first child modifies new parents’ fertility expectations and the subsequent probability of experiencing a second childbirth as a consequence of changes in couples’ subjective wellbeing after the transition to the first parenthood. The study has been developed under a multidisciplinary perspective (demographical, sociological and psychological), using regression models for panel data. I find that the more difficult the adjustment process to parenthood is, the more parents decrease their expectations of having an additional child, and less quickly they proceed to the second child.
El objetivo de la tesis es estudiar la relación entre fecundidad y bienestar subjetivo. Esta relación se analiza en una muestra de parejas australianas (“The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia” (HILDA), 2001-2009) que se observa desde el embarazo de su primer hijo hasta la llegada del segundo. En particular, se analiza el impacto de la llegada del primer hijo en las expectativas de fecundidad y en la probabilidad de tener un segundo hijo, en función de los cambios que experimentan los padres en el bienestar subjetivo. La investigación se ha desarrollado bajo una perspectiva multidisciplinar (demográfica, sociológica y psicológica) y utiliza principalmente modelos de regresión para datos de tipo panel. Los resultados muestran que cuando el proceso de adaptación a la paternidad/maternidad es muy difícil para la pareja, disminuyen las expectativas de tener otro hijo y la probabilidad de ir a buscar un segundo hijo a corto plazo.
