Abstract

Esta tesis explora las fuentes comunes, diferencias y similitudes entre las obras de J. R. R. Tolkien y Jorge Luis Borges. A tal fin establece definiciones de folklore y mitología y describe las fuentes en las que ambos autores abrevaron: la mitología anglosajona, la nórdica y la finlandesa. Evalúa luego un corpus de textos escritos por Borges vinculados con el viejo Buenos Aires y demuestra que esos textos conforman euna mitología. Analiza a continuación la influencia de las mitologías arriba nombradas en las respectivas obras de ambos autores. Demuestra luego que el concepto de subcreación desarrollado por Tolkien llegó a Borges mediante el libro Out of the Silent Planet de C. S. Lewis e influyó sobre sus primeros cuentos. Finalmente, demuestra que Borges leyó El señor de los anillos y revela de qué manera esa lectura influyó en relatos específicos de su autoría.
This thesis explores the common sources, differences and similarities between the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and Jorge Luis Borges. To this end, it establishes definitions of folklore and mythology and describes the sources from which both authors drew: Anglo-Saxon, Nordic and Finnish mythology. It then evaluates a corpus of texts written by Borges related to old Buenos Aires and demonstrates that these texts form a mythology. It then analyzes the influence of the above mythologies in the respective works of both authors. Afterwards it is shown that Tolkien's concept of subcreation reached Borges through C.S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet and influenced his early short stories. Finally, it shows that Borges read The Lord of the Rings and reveals how that reading influenced specific stories he wrote.
