Abstract

In the beginning of 2020 the WHO declared a pandemic that was initiated by the outbreak of a new virus named as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that quickly spread globally, challenging our society and turning it upside down in ways we did not anticipate. The continuous emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants together with the compatibility of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) symptomatology with other viral respiratory infections revealed the need of developing more specific tools than the methods that were widely implemented throughout the pandemic. This thesis presents a novel next generation sequencing (NGS) based testing strategy that aims to differentially diagnose SARS-CoV-2 virus and its variants, as well as other respiratory viruses in order to overcome the limitations of the existing testing methods.
A principios del año 2020 la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) declaró una pandemia que fue iniciada por un brote de un nuevo virus denominado como Coronavirus 2 del Síndrome Respiratorio Agudo Severo (SARS-CoV-2) que rápidamente se expandió de manera global, poniendo a prueba nuestra sociedad de un modo que no habríamos imaginado. La continua aparición de nuevas variantes de SARS-CoV-2 junto con la compatibilidad de la sintomagología de la enfermedad por coronavirus (COVID-19) con otras infecciones respiratorias de causa viral demostró la necesidad de desarrollar herramientas de diagnóstico más específicas que los métodos que fueron implementados durante la pandemia. Esta tesis presenta una nueva estrategia de diagnóstico basada en herramientas de secuenciación masiva de nueva generación (NGS) que pretende diagnosticar de manera diferencial SARS-CoV-2 y sus variantes, así como otros virus respiratorios con el fin de vencer las limitaciones de los métodos de diagnóstico que existen actualmente de una manera coste-eficiente.
